The Afternoon Show – Tuesday April 29th 2014

Miss Clare 2014 – Kate McGlennon joined Máire on today’s Afternoon Show. Kate, from Ennistymon, was crowned the new Miss Clare at an event in the Auburn Lodge on Saturday night last. She’s a 2nd year midwifery student in Dundalk. Kate will now go on to compete in the final of the Miss Ireland Pageant in Dublin.

Aine Bird from the Burrenbeo Trust also joined the show to talk about this year’s Burren in Bloom festival. The annual arrival of the Burren’s world famous wildflowers is unrivalled in the rest of the country – the Burrenbeo Trust’s Burren in Bloom festival is a celebration of this, opening the magic of this landscape to all. Running throughout the month of May in venues around the Burren, Burren in Bloom will feature nearly 40 events including walks, talks and cultural events, with a choice for all age groups. Organised by the Burrenbeo Trust, a charity for the region, the events are sure to enhance your appreciation of the unique and beautiful Burren landscape.  Kicking off events – a collective of interest groups will come together in the Burren this Thursday, May 1st, in order explore how the Burren’s enormous potential as a  ‘learning landscape’ might be developed. See www.burreninbloom.com for a full listing of all walks, talks and events taking place.

Darragh Quinn from The Farmyard, Corofin is one of the organisers of the second annual Festival of Finn. He’s also co-ordinating a Guinness World Record attempt as part of the festival – the largest gathering of beards and moustaches. The attempt will be held on Saturday, May 3rd during the Festival of Finn over the May Bank Holiday in Corofin GAA grounds.  Drama will be running high in Corofin as the hirsute gather for the record attempt on Saturday and for Ireland's Best Beard and Moustache Championships on Sunday at the Farmyard.  There will be plenty for the whole family to enjoy, including a street market, Farmyard Family Fun Day, Duck race, Lark at the lake, dancing, and live entertainment in the pubs.
