The Afternoon Show – Tuesday February 19th 2013

On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show Gavin spoke with Alex Eliseev, a Senior Reporter at Eyewitness News on Talk Radio 702 in Johannesburg about the latest news on Oscar Pistorius. A South African Magistrate has ruled that Oscar Pistorius will face a premeditated murder charge, which means his bail application will be more difficult.
Magistrate Desmond Nair ruled that the Olympian’s case is a schedule six offence – but he’s also indicated that could change, depending on the evidence. Prosecutors claim the athlete put on his prosthetic legs and walked seven metres before firing through a bathroom door and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.  Meanwhile Ms. Steenkamp’s funeral’s taken place in Port Elizabeth.

US Army Colonel Ann Wright was also a guest of the show this afternoon. Col. Wright, who resigned over the invasion of Iraq in 2003, is currently on a speaking tour of Ireland. Col. Wright resigned because she was against the invasion of Iraq without the consent of the U.N Security Council, among other reasons concerning foreign policy. She spoke at a public meeting at Richardsons, Eyre Square, organised by Galway Alliance Against War yesterday and visited Shannon Airport as part of her speaking tour.

Sisters Clare McGrath and Norma Cahill are the Team Trainers for the Clare competitors, which have been to the fore at the National Stillwater Lifesaving Championships, held at the University of Limerick this past Saturday. Nearly 200 people took part in the annual competition, which tests teams in the skills necessary to rescue people in distress in water. Clare’s A team finished first in the senior Men competition, with the county’s B team coming in second. The county also secured the top two spots in the Junior Girls competition, as well as first and third in the Senior Ladies and Junior Boys events. A host of individual titles also came back to Banner County.

Bernard Purcell is the Editor of the Irish World Newspaper in London and joined Gavin for a look at what’s making headlines in the UK and what in particular is having an impact on the Irish Community in Britain.

Joanne O’Meara is an Event Management Student at LIT and let listeners know about how she and her classmates have organised a special event called ‘All sorts’ for elderly people in the Limerick area and nearby. The event has been specifically designed for the elderly who are living in care to feel acknowledged and appreciated.  It takes place in the LIT Campus on Thursday.
