The Afternoon Show – Tuesday January 29th 2013

Joining Clare FM’s Gavin Grace on The Afternoon Show was Fr. Sean Healy of Social Justice Ireland. As talks on ‘Croke Park 2’ continue, Social Justice Ireland is calling on all parties to ensure the negotiations do not produce a situation where other sectors in Irish society will be further disadvantaged.  The group feels there is a danger that resources will be allocated to protect the interests of those who are strong, powerful and/or vocal. SJI believes more than €800m could be saved by capping public service pay at €120,000 while having no reduction for those earning below €40,000.

Marie McMahon is the curator of South Tipperary County Museum in Clonmel and joined the show to talk about an exciting archaeological and historical find. The National Museum’s described the discovery of 81 gold coins at a Tipperary pub as ‘significant’. Dating from the 1630’s to the early 17 hundreds, they were discovered in the foundations of a pub on the Main Street in Carrick-on-Suir. Experts have yet to figure out the actual value of the coins.

Cathal Convery is the Project Manager for the new English Irish Dictionary and spoke to Gavin about the new edition which is being finalised. Ghost estates, cyberbullying, retweet, defriend and cloud computing are amongst some of the new words in the new English-Irish dictionary. This is the first national English-Irish dictionary since the de Bhaldraithe hard copy in 1959 and is available at www.focloir.ie – it is published by Foras na Gaeilge. In total, a team of 71 linguists and lexicographers have worked on this dictionary since 2000 and it will be completed in 2015. The process involved in making the dictionary included how to whittle down from 1.7bn words, finding out there are over 200 variations of the word ‘get’ and deciding what swear words are left in and taken out!
