The Afternoon Show – Tuesday November 12th 2013

Joining Máire on The Afternoon Show today was Verena Tarpey from Rape Crisis Mid West. The Clare Rape Crisis Centre has reported a marked increase in the number of young people presenting and disclosing sexual violence and has found that more men are reporting childhood sexual abuse than before. The service says the rise in unemployment and relationship breakdown  – fuelled by the recession – is one of the main reasons for the rise. Also joining máire in studio was Damien Madigan, an electrician from Ennis who is doing his part to support the Rape Crisis Centre in Clare. Damien is donning a dress as part of the annual Dainty Daisy pageant. Rape Crisis Mid West are hosting their Annual Dainty Daisy competition, a pageant with a difference, in Ennis on Saturday, 16th November, in the Auburn Lodge – the evening promises to be highly entertaining – see their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/rapecrisismidwest If you’d like to contact the service you can do so on free phone 1800 311 511 or see www.rapecrisis.ie

Brian O’Connell is an author and Former Chair of Shannon Heritage and joined Máire on the show to taolk about his new biography telling the fascinating story of the late John Hunt, medievalist and connoisseur, which will be launched tonight by Desmond O’Malley at Bunratty Castle. In it the author delves into the life of this charismatic character and unveils his major contribution to the art world. In his adopted homeland of Ireland, Hunt’s cultural contribution was immense. His role in the restoration and furnishing of historical sites can be seen at the Bunratty Castle and Folk Park and Craggaunowen visitor attractions, both in Co. Clare. The Hunt Collection containing his most favoured art treasures is housed today in the beautiful Hunt Museum in Limerick.

Bernard Purcell , Editor of The Irish World Newspaper in London joined us for a look at what’s making headlines in the UK – including plans to pay mothers to breastfeed their children and celebrating Remembrance Day or Armistice Day.

Marie Molloy from the Ennis & District Lion’s Club, Liam Minogue of Emotions Peer Support and Tom McEvoy from Pieta House were also in studio ahead of the 5th annual Banner Jigs’n’Reels, which takes place this weekend – 7 charities are taking to the stage in Glor on Saturday night with professional Irish dancers. Their aim is to wow the audience, win votes and raise money for their respective causes. Tickets are available from Glor.

Pauline Goggin is a member of the Ground Up Artist Collective. She and fellow artist Marianne Slevin will lead a free workshop on how to make a protest placard at the Courthouse Gallery, Ennistymon, on Saturday next – November 16th from 12 – 2.30pm. Materials supplied and all are welcome. Both artists are oriented towards activism in their current works in the show and are interested in expanding their practice in social engagement with the intention of creating an invitational space for the less visible protesting energy of the community.
