The Afternoon Show – Tuesday October 30th 2012

On The Afternoon Show Ian Power, Communications Officer with SpunOut.ie joined Máire Moynahan to discuss the worrying issue of cyber bullying. The youth organisation has issued guidelines to fight cyber bullying following the death of 13-year-old Erin Gallagher in Ballybofey in Donegal on Saturday after alleging she had been bullied in an online discussion forum. SpunOut is advising young people to: ignore bullying and not to respond online, keep screenshot evidence and report incidents to a trusted adult.  SpunOut is an independent, youth powered national charity working to empower young people to create personal and social change

Karen Brosnahan of the Shannon Region Conference & Sports Bureau joined the show to let listeners know about the County Clare Ambassadors Club. The Shannon Region Conference & Sports Bureau and Shannon Development have announced the establishment of a new initiative that will see professional support and advice being offered to individuals or organisations planning to bring sports and business events to County Clare in 2013.The County Clare Ambassador Club will be officially launched at The Rowan Tree Café in Ennis on Thursday, 1st November, from 6p.m. to 7p.m. The Club is designed to provide a targeted approach to attracting conferences and events to Clare and will complement the existing Conference & Sports Ambassadors Programme, which helped bring more than 7 million euro into the Shannon Region during 2011.

Peter O’Reilly of the National Standards Authority of Ireland spoke to Máire about staying safe this Hallowe’en. Children across County Clare are being urged to wear flame resistant Halloween costumes and reflective armbands or strips when out ‘trick or treating’, this weekend, by the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI). Parents should check the labels on all costumes and accessories to ensure they are flame-resistant.

John Sweeney of the Clare Sports Partnership was also in studio to talk about National Recreation Week. The Clare Sports Partnership and Clare County Council are encouraging people across Clare to get out and participate in physical activity during the 3rd annual National Recreation Week, which takes place from October 29th to November 4th. The purpose of the initiative, the theme of which is “Recreation For Life”, is to promote the importance of recreation for young people. This year, members of the public are being encouraged to use some of the many recreational facilities located throughout the County.

Michelle McMahon, a native of Lissycasey and Editor of Her.ie joined the show following the news that Bon Jovi are to headline next year’s Slane Castle concert. The US rock band will top the billing at the Co Meath venue as part of the group’s "Because We Can" world tour on Saturday June 15th. Tickets for gig – starting from €79.50- will go on sale at 8am on Thursday November 8th.
