Joining Clare FM’s Máire Moynahan on The Afternoon Show was Eoin O’Shea, Director of Research & Policy with Turn2me.org as today marks World Suicide Prevention Day. Turn2Me is an online charitable organisation that provides accessible online support, both professional and peer-to-peer to members who are in distress. They currently have a membership of 25,000 and a third of these are Irish residents. Eoin also discussed the ‘Engage Programme’, which will use a combination of weekly, online 1-to-1 counselling sessions provided by professionals as well as other services, such as Online Support Groups and a mood-tracking tool called ‘Thought Catcher’ – all services can be accessed free of charge at the organisation’s website: www.turn2me.org

Sophie Piggott is a Dublin based Professional Surfer and spends most of her weekend’s in Lahinch. She joined Máire to discuss her participation in a recent competition in the North Clare town and the prospects for surfing in Ireland. The West Coast Surf Club, based in Lahinch, held this year’s 10th annual longboard surf competition, hosting some of Ireland’s best male and female surfers. This year there were over 65 contestants entering including 16 female surfers who competed for the men and women’s’ national longboard surfing trophies.  Some of Ireland’s top female surfers took part and also competed in the men’s categories – including Sophie – who now goes on to represent Ireland in the European Championships in the Azores, Portugal this week.

 

Molly Muldoon is the Deputy Editor of Irish Central in New York, an online news site for the Irish diaspora. Today she discussed the news stories that are affecting the Irish community including Irish Nanny Aisling McCarthy Brady’s trial and also how an Irish Citizen, currently on death row in Florida, is seeking help from the Irish government.

 

Wade Murphy is the President of Euro-Toques Ireland and Chef and Proprietor of 1826 in Adare.  Wade is well known to many in Clare as he was the former executive Chef at the Lodge in Doonbeg.  He joined the show to let listeners know about a special competition for young people who want to become top chefs.  Euro-Toques Young Chef of the Year 2013 and Fáilte Ireland is looking to identify young chefs who have the potential to represent the Irish culinary scene, drawing from our land, traditions and culinary heritage. Now in its 23rd year, the Young Food Hero competition is calling out to Clare’s young chefs of any background, aged between 18-26 to enter the competition at www.youngchef.ie. Closing date for the online entries is September 23rd.

 

Declan Quigley is a member of the organising committee for this year’s Ras na mBan. A total of 105 riders from ten nations have entered this year’s edition of the race, Ireland’s top international stage race for women. It’s the biggest ever entry for the event and is matched by for quantity by the quality of the riders set to take the start of this year’s five-day, six stage event in Ennis. Also on the entry list is Ireland’s Olympic and world championship running heroine Sonia O’Sullivan who will try out stage race cycling for the first time as part of the Munster team. The race starts tomorrow Wednesday, 11th September in Ennis and runs until the following Sunday 15th.
