The Afternoon Show – Wednesday April 24th 2013

Clare FM’s Gavin Grace was joined on today’s Afternoon Show by Seán Cottrell, Director of the Irish Primary Principals’ Network. The IPPN proposes a CAO-style application process for school places in an effort to standardise enrolment practice. In a submission to the Department of Education and Skills, the Irish Primary Principals’ Network (IPPN), the professional body for primary school leaders, called for a ‘clearly defined, legally robust national enrolment policy, with a standardised basis for admission to all schools’.

Pat O’Neill is a Team Leader at EmployAbility Clare and spoke to Gavin from Ballyvaughan where Ennis Jobseeker Sylvia O’Doherty is undertaking a job shadow as part of National Supported Employment Week. Sylvia is working with Elizabeth Matthews, a US PhD Student at the Burren College of Art.  Pat and Elizabeth spoke to Gavin on the show about the importance of the awareness week, which runs until 28th of April. Supported Employment Organisations, jobseekers and employers are promoting employment of people with intellectual disabilities through a variety of themed events, seminars, and a national publicity campaign during the week. Job Shadow Day is the highlight of National Supported Employment Week, the aim of which is to promote equality in the workplace and show the valuable contribution that those with intellectual disabilities can make.

From the boyhood excitement of learning he was a descendant of Peter the Great, through the success of “Oliver”, boozy adventures with Keith Moon and disastrous chat show appearances – this was a life well lived. The show comes to Glor on May 10th for one night only.

Last year Peter marked his 60th birthday with a 60km walk, and this year he’ll go the ‘extra mile’ – or more precisely the extra ‘kilometre’ to mark his 61st birthday with his 61km ‘Siúl go dtí Seasca hAon’ walk, on Saturday, April 27th – all to raise funds for Bothar. The walk will begin at the UL travelling out to picturesque Killaloe and returning back in one day! To donate to Peter’s cause please call 1850 82 99 99 or see www.bothar.org
