The Afternoon Show – Wednesday June 12th 2013

On today’s Afternoon Show Denise Dunne from Clare Haven Services joined Gavin Grace to react to a new report that reveals a significant increase in cases of domestic abuse. The recession has been highlighted as one of the reasons for the significant jump in the number of women experiencing abuse in the home. A Women’s Aid report, which was launched today, shows a 55% increase in the number of cases of abuse against women and children that were reported to the charity. It also highlights how its helpline has taken over a thousand calls relating to children witnessing abuse against their mothers. If you would like to contact Clare Haven please call their 24 hour helpline on 065 6822435.

James Doorley is the Deputy President of the National Youth Council of Ireland and spoke to Clare FM’s Máire Moynahan this afternoon about their efforts to tackle youth unemployment. The NYCI is, in particular, looking at how to make the Youth Guarantee scheme a reality for young jobseekers. Of the 61,767 young people on the live register at the end of April, 45% were signing on for one year or more. Over 9,000 were signing on for at least 3 years. NYCI say it is clear that it’s time for action and a Youth Guarantee, if funded and properly implemented, is one concrete measure, which can provide hope for young jobseekers and a pathway to work.

Hugh O’Connell, Journalist with The Journal also joined the show to discuss how Greek state TV and radio were gradually pulled off the air last night as part of a cost-cutting drive demanded by the bailed-out country’s international creditors. The government says it’s temporarily closing all state-run broadcasts and laying off about 2,700 workers. Thousands of protesters have gathered outside ERT’s giant headquarters north of Athens.

Aidan Courtney of The Ennis Book Shop was in studio for his weekly book review.  Today he reviewed “Holy Orders” by Benjamin Black and the latest from Stephen King, entitled “Joyland”.

Luka Bloom was a very special guest of The Afternoon Show today.  Luka aka Kevin Barry Moore, joined Gavin live in studio to talk about his career in music.  Music has been an intrinsic part of his life growing up and all of the family sings and play, but Luka had his own way and style of making music. From a very early age he was writing songs and honing his skills as a serious guitar player. He first went on tour as the support act to his eldest brother, Christy, in 1969. He has toured extensively around the world over the last 4 decades and has released 20 albums spanning his career.  He’ll perform at the inaugural Doolin Folk Festival this weekend.
