On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show Relationship Counsellor Tony Moore from Relationships Ireland joined Máire Moynahan to discuss some worrying trends. Almost half of all couples who seek professional help for marriage problems blame Facebook and Twitter for destroying their relationships. Counsellors have noted a significant surge in those who have cited a partner’s addiction to social media sites as a major reason for breaking up. Therapists at Relationships Ireland said as many 40% of marriages they are trying to save have fallen apart as couples are spending more time posting status updates than talking to each another. Eleanor Murphy is the acting PR Manager with the National Lottery and also joined Máire to discuss today’s news that someone in Ireland will share in the Euromillions jackpot. The National Lottery says it will not reveal the shop where a 94 million euro lottery ticket was sold in an effort to protect the winner. A ticket holder in Ireland will share the near 188 million euro jackpot with a ticket holder in Belgium. It’s not clear if the winning ticket was bought by a syndicate or an individual.
Michael Barry is an apprentice plasterer from Ennis who is hoping to scoop a big win for Ireland at the WorldSkills Competition taking place in Leipzig in Germany from the 2nd to 7th July. 22 year-old Michael is part of an Irish team of apprentices from around the country competing for the prestigious world title in their chosen craft. Michael has drawn support from a leading brand in the construction sector – Gyproc, who is sponsoring his bid for gold.
Aidan Courtney from The Ennis Book Shop joined Máire for his weekly book review and talked about “The House on an Irish Hillside” by Felicity Hayes-McCoy and “GAA Family Silverware: The People & Stories behind 101 Cups and Trophies” by Humphrey Kelleher.
Grammy-Nominated Singer, musician and music producer Iarla O Lionaird was also a special guest of The Afternoon Show today. Iarla is playing a concert at the Cultúrlann Sweeney Kilkee on this Friday night. The Grammy-Nominated artist will be accompanied by Steve Cooney on guitar. The concert is part of the Clare Arts Office series at the Cultúrlann in Kilkee and forms part of the Clare Memory Orchestra festival, which is running up until the 30th of June. Iarla Ó Lionáird – as singer and producer – is well known for his involvement with the Afro Celt Sound System. He is one of the most prominent artists of the Irish Sean nós singing tradition, and has released four solo albums through Real World Records. He also sings on the Peter Gabriel album OVO.
