The Afternoon Show – Wednesday June 5th 2013

On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show Gavin Grace spoke about the first day of the State Examinations with Louise Holden, Education Correspondent with The Irish Times. More than 114-thousand from both cycles have now completed English Paper One – while just over 2-thousand sat English and Communications for the Leaving Cert Applied. Over 4000 examiners will be involved in correcting 3 million test papers following the 13 days of exams across 90 subjects.

Kevin Kiersey is the National Dairy Committee Chairman with the Irish Farmers Association. He spoke to Gavin about the IFA’s views on the latest regulations that will alter the advertising of foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar during children’s television programmes. The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland has issued new rules, which will also restrict the volume of advertising of these foods during general programming after 6pm. Despite restrictions on cheese advertising being included in the draft code – there are to be no restrictions under the final code although there will be an on-screen message. The new rules will come into force on September 2nd. The IFA has strongly welcomed the decision to exempt cheese from the new rules for TV advertising, saying it represented a victory for common sense.
