The Afternoon Show – Wednesday May 1st 2013

On today’s edition of The Afternoon Show Gavin Grace was joined by Eamon Timmins, Head of Advocacy at Age Action. They spoke about the groups view that today’s introduction of a carbon tax on solid fuels will add even more hardship to the lives of older people. Over the next year, the price of a bag of coal will increase by around 3-euro while the cost of peat briquettes is also due to rise. Up to 2,000 deaths can be attributed to the cold every winter.

Barry Spearman from New Age Memorials in Killaloe also spoke to Gavin about how he has launched a new and innovative funeral product – Fibreglass Composite Headstones, which are a first in Western Europe. Barry has been researching a new option for headstones since he ran into difficulty with cleaning his own family headstones and the result is a strong, yet lightweight alternative that he says requires little maintenance compared to tradition marble or granite stones.

Aidan Courtney from The Ennis Book Shop joined the show for his weekly book review. Today Aidan reviewed “Behind the Smile” a biography of one of Ireland’s best-loved poets – Brendan Kennelly by Sandrine Brisset and also a swashbuckling sci-fi fantasy novel – “Retribution Falls” by Chris Wooding.

Also on today’s programme Gavin was joined by The Classic Beatles – the Dublin quartet who are the only Beatles tribute in the world to have worked with famed Beatle producer Sir George Martin, as well as members of an ex-Beatle’s solo band, Oh, and they were requested to perform for Queen Elizabeth II! The Classic Beatles’ illustrious career began modestly in Dublin in the fall of 1990 (as The Quarrymen). The group are pioneers of the tribute scene in Ireland and paved the way for a plethora of tribute acts in the mid nineties. They discussed their upcoming tour and show – Get Back: The Story of The Beatles, which comes to Glor for one night only on May 4th – this Saturday night. This show charts the most important moments in the Beatles’ career from the raw live concerts, groundbreaking recording sessions and TV appearances, on through global recognition, their spiritual searching, the Beatles sound evolved constantly without losing relevance.
