The Afternoon Show – Wednesday May 8th 2013

Joining Gavin Grace on The Afternoon Show was Writer with Red News Fanzine and Balls.ie – Paul Ring and Sports Journalist – Miguel Delaney to talk about how it’s the end of an era at Manchester United. After over 26 years in charge, Sir Alex Ferguson will retire as the club’s manager at the end of the season. The 71-year-old has won 38 trophies in his time at Old Trafford.

Dr. Billy O’Connell, a Miltown Malbay GP and member of the West Clare Taking Care group and fellow member and publican Michael Wilson spoke to Gavin about the positive impact exercise; diet and so on can have on your mental well being and also discussed the effects of alcohol and the use of counselling.  West Clare Taking Care has come together in response to the rate of suicide in their community.  For the past couple of months the group has been talking, researching and meeting to try to figure out how best to address the high level of deaths by suicide in West Clare.  The group facilitates the provision of information on this subject to the community and will hold a seminar on aspects of positive mental health on May 17th in the Armada Hotel, Spanish Point.

Aidan Courtney from The Ennis Book Shop was also in studio for his weekly book review. Today he focused on John Dickie’s Mafia republic and also two graphic novels from O’Brien Press – Big Jim: Jim Larkin and the 1913 Lockout. It’s written by Rory McConville and drawn by Paddy Lynch. Also James Joyce – Portrait of a Dubliner from French cartoonist Alfonso Zapico.

Singer and Song Writer Declan O’Rourke was also a guest of the show this afternoon.  Declan will play in the Lime Tree next Thursday night – always a popular performer, he’s been busy since the release of is 3rd studio album “Mag Pai Zai”, which managed to top the success of his first two albums – Since Kyabram and Big Bad beautiful World.

Liam Cleary is an Ennis Car Dealer and Charity Jet Skier! He and fellow Clare man Darren Hayes circumnavigated Ireland on a jet ski in June of 2010 in a bid to raise funds for local charities and have now set their sights on a far more ambitious challenge with plans to travel from Co. Clare to France and back.  The plans are afoot to undertake the challenge in September – all funds raised will benefit TLC4CF, the William Winder Foundation and the combined search and rescue services around the Clare coast.
