On The Afternoon Show Máire Moynahan spoke with Elaine D’Alton of the Clare Women’s Network about how, as the group says, women are being disproportionately affected by the recession. The Clare Women’s Network, the Limerick Women’s Network and the South West Kerry Women’s Network as part of the National Collective of Community based Women’s Networks (NCCWN) will formally launch the networks as the South and Mid West Region on the 9thof November in Ennis. To celebrate and mark this launch the three networks will host a discussion called “Recession – Where are the Women”. “Women have been disproportionately affected by this recession stated Elaine D’Alton of the Clare Women’s Network, this is clear in the way the cuts have been implemented”. Since the economic crisis broke in 2008, there have been reductions in child benefit; carer’s allowance; disability payment and blind pension; jobseeker’s benefit and so on. These are all issues, which are putting an enormous strain on the daily lives of women, and the NCCWN hope to discuss these important issues with women on the day of the launch. Ed Farnan, Political Correspondent with Irish Central also joined the show to discuss the result of the US Presidential Election. Barack Obama has told the people of America the best is yet to come after securing a second term in the White House. The President addressed jubilant supporters in his home city of Chicago having won enough votes in the swing states to defeat Mitt Romney. He’s promised to sit down with his Republican rival to discuss how they can work together. In his concession speech to his backers in Boston, Mr Romney said he prays the President will be successful in guiding the nation.
Áine Bird is the Communications Officer with the Burrenbeo Trust. She spoke to Clare FM’s Máire Moynahan about the Burren Community Charter. The charter management committee are organising three events under the theme of ‘The Burren – Challenges, Opportunities and Ideas’ with individual events on Funding, Planning and Heritage. The ‘Funding’ event will be in Johnstons Hall, Kinvara on the 14th November with representatives of Clare Local Development Company and Galway Rural Development. ‘Planning’ will be held in the Michael Cusack Centre, Carron on the 21st November with representatives of Clare and Galway planning departments and ‘Heritage’ will be covered in the Micho Russell Centre, Doolin on the 28th November with State heritage representatives.
