The Today Show – Friday June 8th

On the day that Euro 2012 finally got underway, Gavin began today’s program by looking forward to the tournament, and Ireland’s involvement.  He spoke with Paul McKeogh from Doora, one of the many who have travelled to Poland from the Banner County, in order to cheer on Trap’s men and the atmosphere seemed electric.  We also heard from former internationals Gary Breen (a man with strong Clare heritage) and Packie Bonner, who gave their take on Ireland’s preparations, though our own Kevin McGillicuddy was not so optimistic, and predicted that we would not get out of the group.  Gavin is hopeful though!  His voice will be loudest come kick-off against on Sunday night.

Documentary maker Colm Flynn joined us ahead of the screening of a film that he made about Sr. Ethel Normoyle in Ennis on Saturday night.  Sr. Ethel, from Lissycasey, has been working in Missionvale, South Africa for over 20 years, and dozens of Clare residents have travelled to help her with recent in recent years.  Colm told us about some of the more remarkable parts of her back story which are outlined in his film which is now available on DVD.

As always on a Friday, we also heard from Molly Muldoon of Irish Central who briefed us on the latest developments in the investigation into the killing of Trayvon Martin in Florida earlier this year, the remarkable success of one Donegal man on Wall St., and how the Irish community in America will be cheering on the Boys in Green from the U.S.  There’s really no getting away from the football, here’s hoping it goes well.  Come on Ireland!

The Today Show will be back on Monday with our regular coking slot, and a chance for you to get your hands on tickets for Clare v Waterford in the Munster Hurling Championship.  We’ll talk to you then.
