The Today Show – Monday April 2nd

Prof. Patricia Casey of the Iona Institute joined Gavin Grace on The Today Show to discuss the Census figures on marital breakdown. New Census data showing that the number of Irish people who have divorced is up 150 percent in the period 2002 to 2011 has been described as “worrying” by The Iona Institute. Combining separation, divorce and remarriage following divorce, the overall number of Irish people who have experienced a broken marriage has jumped from 155,239 in 2002, to 247,000 last year, an increase of just under 60 percent in that time period.  Since 1986, marital breakdown in Ireland has shown a six-fold increase. In 1986, there were 40,347 separated people.

John Carmody of Aran, the Animal Rights Action Network spoke to The Today Show following the news that a circus worker remains in a critical condition in hospital – after he was crushed by an elephant over the weekend. Courtney Brothers Circus has launched an internal investigation into the incident, which happened in Blackpool in Co. Cork on Saturday. Spanish native Justino Munez suffered severe internal injuries when two elephants charged at one another, causing one to fall and crush Mr. Munez. The incident raises serious questions over whether wild animals should be used for entertainment purposes.
