The Today Show – Monday April 30th

Sheena Twist of Clare Animal Welfare in Crusheen spoke to Gavin Grace following the news that Ennistymon Gardai and the Department of Agriculture are investigating the discovery of the dumped remains of five animals in the area. The decomposing remains of two calves and three dogs were discovered in a wooded area near Lackeen Lake. Clare ISPCA Warden Frankie Coote made the discovery after a tip off from a member of the public and has described the find as disturbing and disgusting. Sheena discussed the supports and services on offer locally for animal owners. If you would like to contact Clare Animal Welfare please call 087 1315904

Brian Sheehan of GLEN – Gay and Lesbian Equality Network and Kilrush native joined Gavin on the show to discuss Jerry Buttimer’s decision to come out publicly as a gay public representative. The Fine Gael Deputy talks about being “a TD who also happens to be gay”, and has highlighted the issues faced by young gay people saying, “if we can ensure that no young person is bullied, no young person is attacked because of their sexual orientation, then it has been a good day”. GLEN has also strongly welcomed the establishment of the Fine Gael LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Group. The Group, whose inaugural event was held on Saturday evening, aims to promote equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people within the Party; including promoting the adoption of equality policies as Party and Government policy.

Conor Goodman of The Irish Times joined the show to tell listeners about a new initiative. The Irish Times is hunting for Ireland’s ultimate place to live and is inviting the public to nominate their favourite place. The “place” could be a town, city suburb, a tiny village or remote rural spot, a tiny community halfway up a mountain, a street, road or housing estate. It can be anywhere that, despite all the problems our nation is going through, you feel supremely lucky to live in. Entry is free and can be completed online at www.irishtimes.com/bestplace. So far 10 towns and villages across Clare have submitted their pitch to become the best place to live – including Feakle, O’Brien’s Bridge, Killaloe and Mountshannon.
