On The Today Show this afternoon, Clare All Star Tony Griffin joined Gavin Grace to talk about a new youth development project currently underway. Four young adults will head to a leadership camp in Canada as part of a positive new Irish youth programme. SOAR, an organisation co-founded by the former hurling star and Karl Swan, was formally launched by the Canadian ambassador to Ireland, Loyola Hearn, and the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Andrew Montague, last week. The foundation aims to introduce programmes to promote self-confidence and leadership skills in young people. The programmes are already beginning to roll out in selected primary and secondary schools around the country. The SOAR organisation was inspired by the late Jim Stynes’s charity REACH in Australia Also joining the show – Eimhear Lynch, a student of St. Anne’s Community College in Killaloe who has been chosen to travel to Canada as part of the programme, spoke to Gavin Grace about her excitement ahead of the trip.
Yannick Read is a parent and spokesperson for the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) in the UK. He spoke to Gavin Grace about how frustrated parents there have launched the world’s first pop-up zebra crossing. The idea was developed by parents in Kingston-upon-Thames after their request for a safe crossing outside their children’s school was turned down on the basis of cost; according to the Highways Agency, a basic zebra crossing costs an eye-watering £114,000. The pop-up zebra crossing costs less than £50 to install and takes 1 minute to set up. It uses recycled linoleum; drain pipes and two orange balloons to create an effect that is almost indistinguishable from the real thing.
Dr. Eamon Doyle, Geologist at the Burren & Cliffs of Moher Geopark explained to Gavin the mystery surrounding the origins of what resembles a footprint in a Google Earth image of the Burren. The Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark received the image from a member of the public last week. On investigation, Dr. Doyle said that the image is that of a Doline, which can be formed by solution of the limestone by rainwater or the collapse of underground caverns or rivers. The Burren also is home to Europe’s largest Doline. The Carran Depression is one of the oldest features in the Burren landscape and is understood to have developed before the last ice age 2 million years ago.
