The Today Show – Monday March 26th

On Monday’s edition of The Today Show, Gavin Grace discussed a worrying new trend with Barry Keating.  Barry is the Road Safety Officer with Clare County Council. Road safety chiefs in the west have expressed concern about a new game among young motorists, which they warn is putting many lives at risk. They say young drivers are engaging in a "beat the clock" game where they try to trim minutes off the estimated journey times on their SatNavs. The practice is said to be most common among young drivers, but middle-aged drivers and some pensioners are also engaging in this game. Last week, Gardaí expressed serious concern over a rise in road deaths in the west over the past two years, which is running contrary to the downward trend nationally.

Orla Ni Eili of the Clare Immigrant Support Centre also joined the show to discuss a workshop for those seeking to apply for Irish citizenship. Doras Luimní and Clare Immigrant Support Centre (CISC) are jointly hosting the workshop called ‘Practical Guide to Citizenship Procedure’ on Tuesday 27th March from 6.30-8.30pm, at Perys Hotel, Glentworth Street, Limerick. Clare Immigrant Support Centre and Doras Luimní are two regional migrant support organisations that have come together to organise an information event to help individuals who are planning to apply for Irish citizenship. There have been changes recently and increased costs associated with the citizenship application. Many people require assistance with making Irish citizenship applications as the process can be lengthy, complicated and costly. For more information you can call CISC on 065 6822026

Paul also discussed the types of planting that people can undertake this week as the weather is fine – especially salad vegetables. For more tips on planting see Paul’s blogspot under the heading “Crop Share”. He advised getting your ground ready for planting come the Summer months. He also advised on the best way to barbecue, how to check that your meat is fully cooked through – especially for poultry and pork and gave tips on different marinades for your meat. For more details on all of Paul’s tips and recipes see http://thesustainablelarder.blogspot.com/

Maureen Mulvihill is a Health Promotion Manager with the Irish Heart Foundation; she spoke to Gavin Grace about how the organisation does not recommend meal replacement products for those who want to lose weight. Dr. Donal O’Shea of the IHF says “quick-fix approaches to weight loss do not work in the long term for more than 95% of people. They say pharmacists are becoming more and more active as health care deliverers, which is very positive – but with these developments come responsibility. By promoting meal replacement products, pharmacists are in danger of encouraging a cycle of failure in people attempting to manage their weight, which is not going to help reduce obesity in our population”.

Also in studio today were the winners of Clare’s Got Talent 2012. 12+1 – an Ennis based acapella act who emerged as victors at Saturday night’s Grand Final of the talent show in Glor.  The all-girl group walked away with the €5,000 prize courtesy of St. Francis Credit Union, Ennis.
