The Today Show – Thursday June 28th

On The Today Show this afternoon, Ennis woman Tina Whelan joined Gavin Grace in studio to talk about “Clare Free to a Good Home” – a novel facebook initiative to help you save money.  The facebook page allows people to advertise items they don’t want or need anymore and offer them, free of charge, to those who have a use for them. People are allowed to claim one item a day and so far Tina has been amazed by the reaction the site is getting. She says up to 50 items a day are being given away to a good home in Co. Clare. Items on offer can include anything from wedding dresses to stoves – anything you can think of! She has also set up a new page for the swapping of kid’s school books – Clare School Book / Uniform Swap.  See the following link for details http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/133940370072989/

Simon Grehan is an Internet Safety Officer with the National Centre for Education – he spoke to Gavin Grace about how half of all eleven and twelve year old children in Ireland have a profile on a social networking site and 18% of all nine and ten year olds, who have a profile, admit they’ve left their privacy settings untouched. These figures are just some of the findings of a new study, conducted by researchers at DIT. Most social networking sites, such as Facebook and Bebo, have rules, banning children under the age of 13 from joining the site. However, despite the age restrictions it seems more and more Irish children are setting up profiles online.
