The Today Show – Thursday May 31st

Today’s program heard the tale of Catherine McMahon, an East Clare woman who made a remarkable difference to live in Australia, after being convicted and exiled there during the famine.  Along with her brothers, Catherine stole a sheep (and gave three-quarters of it away) so was sent to Australia where, among other things, she helped improved the rights of women and of convicts.  Gavin was told her story by Damian King, who has co-written a book about Catherine McMahon.  The item is now available for podcast, as is today’s edition of our popular series Through The Ages, which today came courtesy of Ogonnolloe National School.

Paul Curley and Ken O’Shaughnessy entertained us ahead of a show in Glor this Friday.  ‘What is Wrong with You?’  will raise funds for Clare Haven Services, and is being held this Friday, June 1st.  The lads promised a funny, if slightly risqué evening, but thankfully were on their best behaviour when in studio!!  Gavin also spoke with Dr. Eamon Doyle, a geologist with the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark ahead of the ‘Burren Rocks’ festival which runs throughout June and begins this weekend with an ‘Antiques Rockshow’ event, which will see experts analyze and explain the origins of rocks brought to them by members of the public.
