The Today Show – Tuesday June 26th

On The Today Show Gavin Grace discussed newly released figures that show Irish mothers are waiting longer and linger to have children.  Joining the show – Barbara Finucane, Editor of www.parenthood.ie, from Ruan gave her take on the figures from the ESRI. The study shows that almost 28 per cent of women who gave birth in Ireland in 2010 were aged 35 or older. That compares to just 22 per cent of women in this age group who gave birth in 2001. The perinatal statistics published by the research institute show that just under a third of births were to single mothers in 2010, up from 30 per cent ten years earlier.
Ireland has the highest birth rate in the EU, and also the highest fertility rate, with an average of 2.09 children per woman. Less than half of babies discharged from Irish hospitals were being breastfed in 2010 – one of the lowest rates in Europe.

Shane Casey, Biodiversity Officer with Clare County Council spoke to Gavin about tonight’s talk in Tuamgraney. Shane is to give a talk at CELT (the Centre for Environmental Living & Training), Gleann Glas, Tuamgraney to introduce the CELT initiative to develop a biodiversity plan for Tuamgraney village and environs.  Local schools and the general public are invited to take part in a survey of ecosystems, habitats and species and a plan is to be drawn up to conserve and enhance what is there. It takes place at 7pm tonight.
