Joining Clare FM’s Gavin Grace on The Today Show this afternoon was Archie Simpson, Musical Director of the Liosmorahaun Singers in Kilfenora and Hanne Fisker of the Østerbro Pigekor in Copenhagen, Denmark. The two choirs have come together for a special concert in St. Fachnan’s Church, Kilfenora next Thursday July 5th. The Danish girl’s choir and their choirmaster Marlene Lollike say the poetic energy of the Burren – and the well known song “Fertile Rock” by Luka Bloom – inspired their trip to Clare. An email was sent to Archie Simpson in February 2012 to see if he would be interested in meeting up with the Danish Østerbro Pigekor when they were coming to Ireland in the first week of July. With his reply a whole avalanche of musical creativity started. Each choir will bring their own repertoire along with a couple of songs they will perform together, among them a Danish and Irish Folksong. In celebration of the joint collaboration – Luka Bloom himself will record the inspirational “Fertile Rock” with the two choirs next week. Tickets for the Thursday concert are available on the door or from members of the Liosmorahaun Singers.
Teresa O’Leary, a training and development officer with Macra na Feirme spoke to Gavin Grace about how engaging with your neighbours can help you avoid dangerous isolation. Macra na Feirme has launched the annual “Know Your Neighbour” Weekend. The initiative, in its 7th year, aims to bring communities together to socialise and have fun. Dr Máire Finn of the Ennis Family Medical Centre joined The Today Show for her weekly medical feature – this week Máire focused on dementia and related illnesses. She gave valuable tips and advice for those caring for or living with people with an illness. She discussed Alzheimer’s and answered queries on a wide range of medical issues such as sinus, arthritis and bad circulation.
