5,400 Houses Need To Be Built In Mid-West

Five and a half thousand houses will need to be built in the Mid-West Region over the next three years.

The Housing Agency has published it's first report on supply and demand today, which calls for the construction of 21,000 houses nationally.

Today's report projects a popuation increase of 9,662 in the Mid-West over the next three years.

As a result, the document says five and a half thousand new houses are needed too.

The report also finds that there is an ample amount of zoned land capable of supporting those new homes, but this doesn't account for the availability of services such as water, energy, communications or community facilities.

Housing affordability in Clare was found to be between 10 and 14 per cent of people's net incomes, which means Clare is in the middle of a three-tier recovery that appears to be emerging.

The Housing Minister insists progress is being made with meeting housing demand, but it remains a huge challenge.

Paudie Coffey says the state has already committed to building 35,000 extra social houses nationwide in the next 6 years.
