There are currently 630 applicants awaiting Social Housing in the Shannon area.
The figure emerged a special meeting with local councillors, who were told that the preferred option for providing housing in the area was through refurbishment of existing properties, rather than building of new houses.

9 such properties were refurbished last year while it's hoped 12 more will be acquired for this purpose in 2016.
There are plans in place to build 21 housing units, while there 32 being leased in the area at the moment.
But Cathaoirleach of Shannon Muncipal District, Independent Councillor PJ Ryan says the actually number of people waiting on houses could be much higher.
