With the deadline for Septic Tank Registration upon us, almost 30% of those eligible to declare their waste water treatment systems have yet to do so.
Around 21,000 Clare homes are obliged by law to register their septic tanks, as the government takes action in response to a European Court of Justice ruling regarding the environmental impact of waste water systems.
But the deadline for registration in 5pm this evening, and so far just over 70% of tanks have been documented on the Protect our Water website or through the council’s offices.
The Environment Minister has said repair grants will not be available to those who fail to register, and Clare County council’s Senior Environment Engineer Paul Moroney says they may also face penalties.
