The ballot of Aer Lingus staff for full strike action got underway yesterday evening and if  passed it could result in the entire shut-down of services from next week.

This would passengers chaos for thousands of air travellers through Shannon Cork and Dublin airports.

The pilots at the former state carrier are taking the action in support of Aer Arann staff who last week voted overwhelmingly for industrial action in a dispute about pay.

This would ground Aer Lingus Regional services nationwide – including flights from Shannon to Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh.

However talks between Aer Arann pilots and management  in an effort to prevent a walkout from Tuesday got underway last night.
