Separate Farm Safety Agency Unnecessary – Breen

Clare’s Junior Minister has dismissed calls for a separate farm safety agency to be set up.

There have been nine deaths on farms or in the country’s agriculture sector between January and May this year, while the Teagasc national survey for 2012 to 2017 shows there were 2,814 famr accidents.

An agency, which would work as part of the Health and safety Authority has been proposed by Senator Paul Daly as part of the Fam Safety Bill, which is currently debated in the Seanad.

While Fine Gael Minister Pat Breen believes efforts must be made to prevent farm deaths, of which he says there are too many in this country, he believes a dedicated agency is unnecessary.
