Almost 200 Attend Household Charge Meeting

The main opponents of the 100 euro household charge have been criticised for encouraging people to break the law following last night’s public meeting in Ennis.

Almost 200 people attended the meeting organised by the Anti-Household Charge Campaign in Clare to hear Socialist TD Joe Higgins and Deputy Joan Collins of the People Before Profit Alliance encourage locals to evade the 100 euro levy.

But at a meeting of Ennis Town Council last evening, there was criticism of the TDs who are leading this campaign nationally, particularly as they’re paid Dail salaries, expenses, and an Independent Leaders Allowance of over 40,000 euro.

Ennis Councillor Frankie Neylon says they can well afford to face the consequences of non payment, while the less well off can not, and he called on people to stick together in the recession by paying their way.
