Almost A Third Of Shannon’s Population Working In Industry Sector

Shannon has the fourth highest share of people working in industry in the entire country.

New figures compiled by the Western Development Commission show almost a third of the town’s workers are employed in the sector.

It also reveals industry is growing across the board in Clare.

According to the Western Development Commission, there’s now just shy of 7,000 people in Clare working in industry.

This refers to those involved in the processing of raw materials and manufacture of goods in factories.

While it’s a fall of around 8% since 1996, it still means that overall, Clare ranks seventh nationally in terms of the number of people working in industry.

With 15.5% of Clare’s workforce employed in industry, that is well ahead of the national average of 11.4%.

53% of the county’s industry employment is in Computer & Electronic, MedTech and Machinery & Equipment

Shannon, meanwhile, has the fourth highest share in industry of all towns in Ireland – just under 32% of the town’s entire working population is employed in the sector.
