The Chair of Doonbeg Community Development believes restrictions on swimming that have been introduced at local beaches will hurt domestic tourism.
A notice advising people not to swim has been put in place at White Strand, Doonbeg, and White Strand, Miltown Malbay, while a stronger, temporary swimming prohibition is being implemented at Kilkee and at the front beach in Quilty.
Clare County Council says the measure follows the discovery of increased levels of bacteria in the water, which in turn is being blamed on recent heavy rainfall.
