Anglo Trial Told Prosecution “Danced” Around Evidence

Lawyers for a former Anglo executive on trial for allegedly defrauding Revenue have told the jury the prosecution has ‘danced and pirouetted around the evidence’ in an attempt to mislead them.

67-year-old Bernard Daly of Collins Avenue West in Dublin is one of three former executives at the bank accused of trying to hide accounts connected to Sean Fitzpatrick.

The court has been hearing closing statements – with the jury expected to consider a verdict this week.

In his closing statement, Sean Guerin representing Bernard Daly told the jury that the prosecution’s case had resorted to the ‘cheap phrase ‘he must have known’.

He said the prosecution had claimed that Mr Daly was key to selecting the members of an audit of non-resident accounts in Anglo in 2003 and 2004 – but said that was not the case and there was no evidence to support that allegation.

Mr Guerin told the court that the prosecution wasn’t satisfied to merely spin the evidence – but was now dancing and piroutting around it in a bid to mislead the jury – adding that was a ‘disgrace’.

All Three  former Anglo executives deny the charges – a verdict is expected this week.
