Army Deployed To South East Clare

The Irish Army has been deployed to assist local authority flood defence efforts in South East Clare.

Clare County Council officially requested the assistance of the defence forces overnight following a dramatic rise in water levels in the Springfield area of Clonlara.

Clare County Council received confirmation from the Defences Forces of its decision to immediately deploy members to the south east of the county around 12.30am last night.

It follows a dramatic rise in water levels yesterday evening in the Lower River Shannon, south of Parteen Weir, which resulted in the encroachment of floodwaters on a small number of properties in Springfield.

A number of roads are now impassable including the main road from Mount Catherine (DeCourcy) Bridge to Cottage Cross, with several properties isolated as a result.

Affected homeowners are being assisted with access to and from their properties by Clare Fire and Rescue Service and Clare Civil Defence.

Clare County Council says it will be liaising with the ESB, An Garda Síochána and local property owners throughout the day today and will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation on an ongoing basis.

Water levels are expected to rise even further today as a low-level yellow weather warning remains in place for Clare.

Up to 35 millimetres of additional rain has been forcast for the county.
