Clare County Council says an operation to clear dumped asbestos from nine sites in West Clare could cost hundreds of thousands of euro.
The toxic material has been uncovered at nine separate sites near Kilkee and Kilrush, and is believed to have originated from Council works on water mains works throughout the West Clare area.
The Council has notified the Health and Safety Authority, and taken steps to secure the sites in question, while an independent investigation is being carried out to determine who had dumped it.
A clean-up operation is also underway, and Senior Engineer with the local authority's Environment Section Paul Moroney says this will likely lead to a significant bill.
