At present (10:00pm) the spillage is reported to cover a vast distance from Junction 11 (Dromoland) to Junction 12 (Killow) on the Northbound section of the M18, the Ennis bypass to the Clareabbey Roundabout and onwards to the Lahinch Road.
The spillage has also been reported on the Ennis-Kilrush Road.
There has been one accident at Caherea on the N68 in the dangerous conditions. No further details are known in terms of injuries, but it's understood one car is involved.
Fire control have warned motorists to take extreme care, especially on the motorway, while road closures will be in place on part of the route as the spillage is treated.
