Foreign Affairs Minister Doesn’t Believe Key Shannon Routes Will Need State Subsidies

The Minister for Foreign Affairs doesn’t believe key strategic routes at Shannon will need to be subsidised by the State as travel restrictions are lifted.

It comes after Tánaiste Leo Varadkar appeared to hint last month that the Government would be willing to incentivise airlines to restore routes such as the Aer Lingus Heathrow and transatlantic trips that were lost in the Midwest at the onset of the pandemic.

While United Airlines and American Airlines have signalled their intent to resume Shannon transatlantic services in 2022, Aer Lingus has so far stopped short of providing the same commitment.

Speaking during a visit to Ennis last evening, Minister Simon Coveney says the US routes may not need State intervention to resume in Shannon.
