Plane Diverts To Shannon After Windscreen Damaged In Flight

A transatlantic jet has been forced to divert to Shannon Airport after a cockpit window was damaged in flight.

The American Airlines flight was travelling from London to New York last night with 168 passengers and a crew of 13 on board, when they got into difficulty.

American Airlines flight AA-141 took off from Heathrow shortly before 8 o o’clock last night, and was less than an hour into its journey when the crew reported a problem.

The Boeing 777-200 jet was passing over Ireland when crew informed air traffic controllers at Shannon that they wished to divert to the mid-west airport, having suffered damage to the front windscreen.

Airport fire and rescue crews were placed on standby and the plane landed safely in Shannon at ten past nine.

The flight remained in Shannon overnight and customers were provided with overnight hotel accommodation.

A replacement aircraft is due to continue the journey this morning.
