For the sixth year running most of Clare’s bathing areas once again achieved good water quality status. They are Lahinch,  White Strand- Miltown Malbay, White Strand- Doonbeg,  Spanish Point  Kilkee, Cappagh Pier in Kilrush, Bishops Quarter, Fanore, Ballycuggeran and Mountshannon.

There’s also good news for Ballyalla Lake outside Ennis, in 2008 it was classified as having poor water quality but its now EU compliant, however it has only achieved the sufficient water quality standard, and was last deemed to have good water quality in 2003/2004.

Despite the overall quality of our bathing water remaining high – the Environmental Protection Agency  says they have concerns over some standards in beaches because of inadequate sewage infrastructure

Nine of our 131 beaches and lake shores failed to meet minimum clean water standards last year – showing no improvement in numbers since the previous year
