Following the unanimous verdict of the jury – Judge Barry White has only one sentence he can hand down to Colm Deely today – a term of life imprisonment.

The seven women and five men found the 41 year old Ballyvaughan father guilty of murder, despite his defence that he didn’t mean to hurt Deirdre McCarthy and that he had "lost control".

During the trial Colm Deely admitted strangling the 43 year old guest house worker in a row at her home after they’d been socialising together in March of 2011 – and dumping her body into the sea near Fanore.

He spent last night in custody and is due back before the Central Criminal Court in Dublin again this morning, where victim impact statements on behalf of the family of Deirdre McCarthy are expected to be hear before Colm Deely is sent to prison to begin a life term.
