Ballyvaughan Woman Brands Symphysiotomy Redress Scheme as an Insult

A Clare campaigner for justice for victims of symphysiotomy is describing the government's redress scheme as an insult.

Ballyvaughan's Ellen Moore says she and her colleagues unanimously reject the plan and won't give up their fight.

Ellen Moore has suffered chronic pain and other medical problems since she had the controversial childbirth proceduere performed on her, without permission, at a Midlands hospital in 1965.

The now discredited practice of symphysiotomy involved the cutting of a woman's pubic bone during childbirth and left many women with walking difficulties and incontinence amongst other issues.

Survivors have now unanimously rejected a government offer of a redress scheme, branding it as inadequate, and Ellen says they won't back down in their campaign.
