Six people have died on our roads – north and south of the border –  so far this bank holiday weekend.

Yesterday a woman in her twenties died in Co. Mayo, while a 67-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man died in a road accident outside Newry in Co Down.

On Saturday a woman in her mid 50's died in a collision in Co Galway.

And on Friday, two British soldiers died in Co Antrim.

The head of Clare's traffic corps is calling on all motorists to be mindful of visitors to the county when out on the roads this bank holiday Monday.

Inspector John Ryan says it's important on a traditionally busy weekend that local people – who are more familiar with the roads – exercise patience with pedestrians and those taking their time.

Gardaí are manning checkpoints across the county today – with particular emphasis being placed on driver fatigue, drink driving and speeding.
