Bravery Of Local Gardaí To Be Recognised

Two local Gardai are to be honoured for their outstanding acts of bravery at a ceremony in Dublin today.

On January 13th of this year, Garda James Hanley and a colleague responded to a 999 call indicating that a woman had jumped into the River Fergus in Ennis.

When arriving at the scene, they found her to be unresponsive, so Garda Hanley waded out through the river’s strong current and was able to remove her with the assistance of others.

In a separate incident in June of last year, Lissycasey man and Clare Senior Football Goalkeeper Joe Hayes, a Garda based at Henry Street in Limerick, made a save of a different kind, as he pulled a 22-year-old woman from the River Shannon.

Both will be among 21 people who are to be recognised at today’s National Bravery Awards.
