Breen And Carey To Run For FG In General Election

Clare Fine Gael TDs Pat Breen and Joe Carey have been selected to represent the party in the upcoming general election.

The two Dáil representatives were given the backing of party members at the Fine Gael selection convention in Ennis tonight, defeating Ennis Councillor Mary Howard in a vote.

Of the other candidates, Ger O'Halloran of Quin had withdrawn prior to the event, while Senators Martin Conway and Tony Mulcahy both withdrew from the vote before it was held.

Party headquarters had dictated that two candidates be chosen on the night, though a third name could be added to the ticket at a later date, and both Senators have said they still wish to run for Fine Gael.

No official results of the ballot were announced, but Deputy Carey confirmed afterwards that he had topped the poll.

The Clarecastle representative, and his party colleague from Ballynacally, now join Fianna Fáil's Timmy Dooley and Michael McDonagh, and Sinn Féin's Noeleen Moran as confirmed candidates in the Clare constituency in the General Election.
