Brother of Man Killed in Farm Accident Appeals for Farmers to be more Safety Conscious

An O'Briens Bridge man who is speaking out on the issue of farm safety is hoping that his brother's death in a tragic accident can help act as a wake-up call to the industry.

Dermot Hogan is one of 17 people to lose their lives on Irish farms this year in what his brother Eugene says is a crisis.

It's less than three weeks since Dermot lost his life after falling while working on the roof of a shed on his farm.

Well-known in farming and in GAA circles, the death of the manager of the Offaly Under-21 Hurlers has left his family in shock, though his brother Eugene is hoping that it won't be in vain.

Speaking on Clare FM's Morning Focus today, he said the accident could have happened to virtually any farmer in the country.

Dermot is one of 17 people who have lost their lives in farm accidents this year.  Four of these are children.

Eugene Hogan has already been in contact with other campaigners, in the hope that they can work with authorities to address what he feels is a crisis.

He also feels a change in mindset is needed, and is hoping that the tragic loss of his brother can inspire farmers and their families to take the problem more seriously.
