Busy year for coastguard units in Clare

Bad weather conditions have resulted in a busy year for coastguard units in Clare.

The number of callouts at the Doolin Coastguard Station was up from last year, with the Cliffs of Moher coastal trail between Liscannor and Doolin highlighted as a significant source of incidents.

People heading outdoors over the holiday period are advised to ensure they are properly equipped.

Officer in Charge at the Doolin base, Matty Shannon, says poor weather has led to extra callouts…

Nationally the coast guard service has saved 290 lives this year.

The 2015 statistics show that's a rise of 12 per cent.

75 bodies were also recovered.

And the Gardaí are getting more help in their search for missing people – the coast guard has been used to search coastal and remote areas.

The most significant rise has been a 10 per cent increase in helping people who got into difficulty on the shoreline, sometimes being swept into the sea by breaking waves.
