As the clean up from Storm Desmond continues and parts of the country brace themselves for more damage, cabinet ministers will discuss the Government's response to the crisis this morning.

Ahead of today's briefing, Taoiseach Enda Kenny met with the Defence Minister Simon Coveney, Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin and Minister of State for the OPW Simon Harris last night.

Some details of the proposed flood package have emerged – it's understood to include 5 million euro in initial funding, but the situation will be monitored closely to see whether more is needed in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Storm Desmond claimed its first Irish victim after the body of a pensioner swept away in a flood was found in County Monaghan.

The remains of 70-year-old Ivan Vaughan were discovered around 10 metres from his car yesterday morning.

It's thought he was returning to his home on Sunday night when he was swept away.
