Protestors in Ennis want the A&E department at the county hospital to be re-opened, despite warnings that the necessary equipment and staffing have been stripped from the facility.

The voice of Mayor of Ennis, Ann Norton, who spoke of her daughter's fear of attending the Emergency Department at University Hospital Limerick.

Councillor Norton was one of a number of political representatives who spoke at a public meeting in O'Connell Square which was attended by more than a hundred people, who had one clear message – Ennis needs more resources.

It follows a week of record trolley numbers at the country's hospital last week, with University Hospital Limerick the worst affected.

Clare's Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley believes proposals to deal with capacity issues should include increased beds for Ennis:

The protest was organised by the Friends of Ennis General Hospital who are calling on Health Minister, Simon Harris to re-open the A&E at the county hospital.

That's despite warnings that the necessary equipment and staffing have been stripped from the facility.

Clare Independent TD Michael Harty believes the only way forward is to develop services in Ennis.

But many of those who attended the public meeting told Clare FM, that they didn't receive the answers they were hoping for at yesterday's gathering.
