Call For ‘Rural Uber’ Restrictions To Be Lightened

There are calls in Clare for the legal restrictions for a ‘rural Uber’ type service to be loosened in Ireland.

Sixmilebridge Fianna Fáil Councillor Alan O’Callaghan believes it’s essential for rural Clare to survive, given the strict new drink-driving laws which mean an automatic ban for anyone found with any alcohol in their system.

The local authority is to write to the Transport Minister outlining this concern, pointing to the fact that in other European countries, private vehicles owners can operate as Uber drivers in their spare time.

Councillor O’Callaghan, who’s also a publican, believes an arrangement like this would be of benefit to all – and not just pub goers.
