The Local Authority has unveiled details of a scheme which aims to cut the number of business premises which have lain vacant for a long period of time.

Property owners, whose businesses have bene unoccupied for over two years, will be given a rates reprieve in the event that a tenant moves in for at least one year.

This will see up to 7500 euro knocked off rates bills over three years, while other start-up supports will also be available.

The announcement comes days after a reecnt meeting in parnell Street, at which the number of vactant properties was discussed.

Local trader Noreen Twomey Walsh says this scheme is a good start, but more is needed.

The scheme has been given the backing of one former Ennis Mayor.

Fine Gael Councillor Johnny Flynn says the iniatitive will ensure new businesses are given as much assistance as possible when starting out.

However, he agrees that stronger measures could be needed to compel property owners to either rent out or repair their premises.
