Calls For Full Scale Public Inquiry Into Sale Of Loans At IBRC

A full scale public inquiry into the sale of loans at IBRC needs to be considered, according to the Taoiseach.

The Cregan Commission which was set up to investigate certain transactions at IBRC has faced a number of legal barriers and has been given a two month extension.

The second interim report from the Cregan Commission was published last Friday, on the evening of a bank holiday weekend.

The Taoiseach has denied that there was anything sinister in the timing of the release.

But given that the original deadline for the full report was December, Social Democrats TD Catherine Murphy questioned whether we'll ever see a final product.

The Commission is investigating write downs on 38 transactions at the Irish Banking Resolution Corporation including the sale of Siteserv.

But the interim report highlighted again that there are significant legal barriers to the inquiry properly investigating the writedowns – which cost the taxpayer tens of millions of euro.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny now says that all options have to be examined.

He's given the Cregan Commission a two month extension to continue investigations.
