However, government figures have been quick to say that Irish Water's future is secure, despite being told that it can't be considered as a financially indepdendent entity.

Eurostat's findings that Irish Water cannot be considered as a standalone company have led to fresh criticism for the beleagured state utility.

Some have even called for it to be scrapped, including Clare's Timmy Dooley.

The Fianna Fáil TD admits the cost of this would be significant, but he feels Irish Water has already wasted too much money to be allowed to continue.

However, one of the county's government representatives disagrees, and insists Irish Water does have a future.

Ennistymon Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway admits that Irish Water has been hit with "setbacks", but says it needs to be kept in situ.

Meanwhile, one Clare TD is calling for the Dáil to be recalled to allow for a debate on this week's developments.

Michael McNamara says he supports water charges, and the creation of a water utility company, but has been criticial of Irish Water itself.

He thinks government policies need to be re-visited, and soon.
